Preparing to become a prescriber
An online resource on Medicines Management and basic Pharmacology, that will help you to get ready to become a prescriber.
If you want to brush up on medicines management and pharmacology, or if you are thinking about undertaking the NMP course at level 6 or 7, then this could be an ideal resource for you!
It has been developed for UG nursing students who now need to be ‘prescriber ready’ when they register, as well as for qualified nurses (and other professions) who may wish to have the prescribing fundamentals in the bag before doing the full Non-medical Prescribing qualification.
This resource/course has been developed by Programme Leads who manage NMP post
graduate courses and qualifications at universities.
Modular Approach
You can work through each of the 9 modules in your own time and at your own pace. If you
wish, you can then check your understanding through the quizzes at the end of each section.
Alternatively, optimise your study time: go straight to the quizzes and identify your
knowledge gaps and the sections you need to focus on.
- Consultation, Communication and Clinical Decision Making
- Pharmacology
- Prescribing Safely, Appropriately and Cost Effectively
- Public Health
- Legal and Professional Frameworks
- Prescribing Professionally
- Factors that Influence Prescribing
- Prescribing Governance

More info about becoming a Prescriber
If you want to be able to prescribe, then you need to undertake a professional prescribing qualification at a university which has had the course approved by the appropriate professional awarding body.
This resource does not give you the prescribing qualification. It prepares you to undertake the qualification and is ideal if you want to brush up your knowledge in medicines management and pharmacology.
It helps prepare you for what is one of the more challenging post graduate qualifications out there. It is a very intensive programme – demanding a lot. So, a little bit of preparation could ease the pressure, or allow you to hit the ground running.
FAQs

6/7 course at university?
No. We want to be clear and transparent here. Many don’t. But you may find it useful. Newly qualified nurses will come out of university with this knowledge as part of their course now.
The resource costs £24.00 for 1 year of access.
We have created a helpful Youtube video so that you have a full understanding of the content of the course, and what is covered by each module.
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide this to individuals for free. We have however kept the licence fee as low as possible. Less than the price of a book!
We can set up free trial access through our organisation accounts. Please approach your NMP Lead or a lecturer at your University and ask them to contact Jo to set you up a free account.
Yes. Please follow the guidance of your professional body.
You can download a completion receipt for each of the modules you finish, which include:
• Consultation, Communication and Clinical Decision Making
• Pharmacology
• Prescribing Safely, Appropriately and Cost Effectively
• Public Health
• Legal and Professional Frameworks

If you complete the full resource, passing the quizzes at each of the three levels, then you will be able to download a course completion certificate.
We suggest 30-60mins per module. Each module subject area has 3 levels (parts). You can pick and choose modules you want to make sure you are up to speed on. Many people want to focus on Pharmacology for example. The whole course will take 12-18 hours to complete.
When you undertake the IP qualification at university you will study each of the modules included in this resource at a more in-depth level. We have a level 6/7 version of the NMP resource, which covers all areas of the curriculum for all professional bodies. Some universities provide their students with free access to this resource. You can also access the resource through an individual account.
